Joan McDonald, LCSW
Choosing therapy is a brave step to take, and after you take that step, I will walk with you. It is my priority to create a space where you feel comfortable and supported as you express yourself. I want to partner with you and learn about your specific needs so that I can understand your experience, without assumptions. I will provide empathy, education, and insight as we work together. I want to help you recognize your own strengths and build off of them as we create solid goals so that you can take active steps towards healing, change, and growth. I will work with you and your family to help you meet your individual needs.
Offering Support You Need
Before becoming a therapist, I was a high school teacher for 11 years, and my background in education allows me to understand my clients’ experiences. My passion is working with adolescents, young adults and their families. I love supporting caregivers and provide education and guidance to help them more effectively communicate and deepen their relationships with their children.
My areas of focus include anxiety, ADHD, depression, trauma, self-esteem, school stressors, family therapy and life transitions. I help clients build effective coping skills, communication skills and executive functioning skills so that they can feel empowered to meet their goals with clarity and intentional action. In order to individualize treatment, I am informed by a variety of approaches, including CBT, DBT, insight-oriented therapy and evidence-based parenting practices.
The Right Mindset
I am a strengths-focused therapist who approaches therapy with a growth mindset. I love helping adolescents, young adults and their families navigate the challenges of the transition from childhood to young adulthood. I offer both day and evening hours to accommodate busy after-school schedules.
